Located just west of Ludham, How Hill aims to maintain and manage an area of the Broads using ancient and traditional methods.
You'll see reed and sedge beds which are still managed and hand-cut using traditional ways and tools. There are marsh meadows with grazing cattle, a carr woodland (dense and swampy woodland), dykes and two stretches of open water - Reedham Water and Crome's Broad. You can explore the reserve either on foot via a number of public footpaths, on a specially designed nature trail, or with a 50-minute boat trip aboard the environmentally-friendly Edwardian-style electric-powered boat, The Electric Eel.
A restored thatched cottage is maintained to give an idea of the life of a marshman and his family at the end of the 19th century. How Hill Nature Reserve is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with swallowtail butterflies, harriers, bearded reedlings and bitterns.
A day-trip to How Hill could also take in the nearby Beeston Hall & Gardens and the Fairhaven Garden Trust.
