Vsitors to the romantic River Tweed should make a trip to the Union Suspension Bridge high on their list of priorities.

This historic structure is the oldest surviving carriage suspension bridge in Britain – and indeed one of the earliest suspension bridges in the world. It was opened with great aplomb in 1820, six years before the Menai Suspension Bridge which links Anglesey with mainland Wales.

The Union Suspension Bridge (also known as the Union Chain Bridge) is located upstream of Berwick-upon-Tweed and spans the border between England and Scotland. It is still open to vehicular traffic – and pedestrians can feel the bridge oscillate every time a car crosses.
