Cycling near Newark
The largely flat landscape of Nottinghamshire makes exploring by bike fun and easy for all the family.
Not all of Nottinghamshire’s towpaths are accessible by bike, but scenic waterside cycling can be enjoyed along sections of the River Trent, the Chesterfield Canal and the Erewash Canal. Book lovers can explore deep into DH Lawrence country along the Erewash Canal – and welcoming waterside hostelries at Trent Lock promise to wet your whistle ready for the ride home.
Why not try out some of these routes next time you're out on your bike:
Erewash Canal to Trent Lock - this section stretches for four miles along National Cycle Route 67, joins the canal at Trowell and continues to Trent Lock via Stapleford and Long Eaton. There is a very short road section at the latter.
Trent Lock to Trent Bridge - spanning nine miles, the path passes beside the canal at the lock then onto the riverside - north bank - passing the Attenborough Reserve and Beeston Lock. It then goes onto the 'new' Clifton Bridge and then old Toll Bridge. Cyclists may cross here to the southbank and use the other bank; they may also do this at the Suspension Bridge.
Beeston Lock to City and River Trent - a six mile route from Beeston Lock, it is possible to use the canal to reach the city centre and continue onto the river close to Trent Bridge. The canal passes close to the main railway station.
