Image for Newark Castle

A dramatic 12th century castle, on the banks of the River Trent Newark Branch. Although a site of military significance from much earlier times, most of what remains of the castle today was extravagantly re-built by self-effacing Bishop of Lincoln and Lord of the Manor of Newark - Alexander the Magnificent -at the beginning of the 1100s. Recent archaeological digs on the site have revealed Saxon artefacts.

Nearby is Newark Town Lock, as well as a British Waterways yard. On the waterside, just to the east of the castle, is Millgate Museum (01636 655730), which details Newark's history of water trade and industry. Newark-on-Trent itself, at the junction of the ancient Fosse Way and the Great North Road, has long been a town of strategic significance. A Royalist stronghold, it was besieged by the Roundheads during the English Civil War.

Despite sprawling development the heart of the town retains much of its historic charm with a market and a number of antique shops.
