Powis Castle
Powys

In the year 1200 the Welsh princes of Powys built the imposing fortress which perches dramatically on cliffs above Welshpool. The castle has been continuously inhabited for more than 700 years - a fact which accounts for its splendid condition both outside and in. Successive generations of Herberts and Clives have added to and embellished their family home, and the medieval military stronghold is now an elegant country house boasting exquisite paintings, fine furnishings and Indian works of art.
The grounds of Powis Castle attract nearly as much praise and attention as the fortress itself. The 17th century gardens bear traces of the Italian and French styles, with clipped yew hedges, magnificent terraces, lead statues and an orangery, and the surrounding woodlands offer pleasant surroundings for an afternon stroll.
