Welshpool

Surrounded by the rolling hills of Wales’ borderland, Welshpool is a friendly market town situated on the banks of the Montgomery Canal.

The town’s train station is just a short walk from the Montgomery Canal, so commuters from Shrewsbury can stretch their legs at the end of the day with a walk along the water. Leave the canal at Severn Street and head into town and you will find the historic Royal Oak Hotel which has a bar, cafe, an a la carte menu and an all day menu. You can also walk up the High Street to the welcoming Raven Inn which is next to the station for the Welshpoool and Llanfair Light Railway.

Days out in Welshpool
Home to the town’s Earl, Powis Castle keeps a watchful eye over the town. With its well-manicured gardens, a museum packed with Indian treasures and the garden tea room, it offers a varied day out for all the family. Nearby, the Montgomery Castle overlooks the stunning the Severn Valley – take your camera and get some truly wonderful pictures. And why not send the best in to Waterscape.com for the picture gallery?

Throughout the spring and summer, Welshpool is alive with activity as tourists from far and wide make their way to three festivals. The streets are thronged with people eager to see the traditional boat parade as part of the Welshpool Carnival at the end of May, hundreds of enthusiasts descend on the town for the Cambrian Transport Festival in June and in mid-July, the town echoes with yee-haws and thigh-slapping at the Country and Western Music Festival.
