17th century domestic life is re-created in this extensive country estate.
The green and pleasant countryside of Cannock Chase leads seamlessly into the 900 acre Shugborough Estate, seat of the Earls of Litchfield. At its centre stands the Mansion House, a stately residence which was first built in 1693 and is now the enviable home of Patrick Litchfield, photographer and second cousin to the Queen. Inside some interesting collections of ceramics, silver and French furniture compliment the contemporary displays of Patrick Litchfield's photographic work.
However, Shugborough Estate has more to offer than the usual stately home experience. On top of the historic house, beautiful furnishings and extensive grounds it also boasts the Staffordshire County Museum, where costumed guides recreate life 'below stairs' for the entertainment and education of visitors. Once you have tried your hand at turning the dolly peg in the laundry, the Park Farm offers the chance to see how cheese and butter are made, as well as a tour of the rare breeds Georgian farmstead.
Still want more? All guests are encouraged to visit the 250 year-old monument in the grounds which features a mysterious 10-letter code. A team of modern-day and veteran codebreakers has been challenged to crack the cryptic message, but visitors are also welcome to try and break the code that is rumoured to have links with the Holy Grail.
