Get away from the hustle and bustle of Stoke-on-Trent with a peaceful trip to Westport Lake Nature Reserve.
Two lakes make up the nature reserve, with the larger of the two being a haven for walkers and anglers alike. Take a break and head to the lake for an afternoon of walking, while spotting some of the many birds that have made Westport Lake their home. Look out for kingfishers and dragonflies and report your sightings on the wildlife survey. Have your camera ready and try and catch a glimpse of a dragonfly on film and enter the dragonfly photo competition.
Close to the Trent & Mersey Canal, Westport Lake is a great place to enjoy pleasant cycle rides. Head to the park and then onto the canal towpath for a traffic-free route. When cruising along the canal, why not moor up before heading to the lake for a relaxing morning, before continuing on your way.
The conservation area is hugely popular with walkers, eager to escape from everyday life and includes a series of small ponds. Unfortunately, this part of the lake is not open to anglers. A health walk was opened in March 2004 and a level footpath around the site makes walking at Westport Lake much more appealing. The site is home to a variety of signed walking routes in various lengths with good surfaces, so there’s something for everyone, whether you prefer a relaxing stroll or a marathon walk.
Opened recently, the play area allows children to run off some energy before heading home.
