Stoke on Trent
The Caldon Canal, a strong contender for the title of England’s most scenic waterway, starts in the town of Stoke on Trent.
Stoke on Trent is fortunate to have two canals open to navigation running through its centre. The Trent & Mersey, strongly supported by Josiah Wedgwood throughout construction, still passes by Stoke’s traditional potteries and, poignantly, the Wedgwood Visitor Centre. Residents can enjoy a relaxing waterside stroll and watch the colourful narrowboats making their way through the locks en-route to Stoke Summit. Head for the China Garden pub at Etruria and make a detour on the way back via the Etruria staircase locks on the Caldon Canal.
Life from the towpath
Stoke on Trent railway station is conveniently situated close by the Trent & Mersey Canal – so its easy to take a waterside walk to catch your train. Similarly, the University, Hanley Park and numerous shops, offices and well-stocked fisheries are within a couple of minutes walk of the towpath.
For boaters, Stoke on Trent is a good location to stock up on supplies and other essential – or perhaps to moor up and enjoy a hearty meal in a waterside pub.
