Stone
The attractive town of Stone enjoys many claims to fame.
It is the home of Hovis, it produced the world’s biggest gooseberry in 1842 and, most pertinently, it is where Josiah Wedgewood and James Brindley met to sign the document which established the Trent & Mersey Canal Company in 1766.
The Trent & Mersey Canal continues to repay this kindness, bringing some 12,000 narrowboats through the town ever year. Holiday-boaters can hire their narrowboat directly from Stone, while boaters already en-route can moor up and enjoy a drink in the Swan Inn.
But it is not just boaters who make the journey to Stone. Walkers, cyclists, nature lovers and day-trippers all find something to entertain them in the historic town. And at the end of the day you can sit back and relax in one of Stone’s welcoming pubs and restaurants, planning tomorrow’s itinerary.
