An 18th century watermill with an intriguing past.
Shaldford Mill has a pleasant setting on the banks of the River Tillingbourne, not far from Guildford, Surrey. The mill is a worthy attraction thanks to its well-preserved machinery and large timber frame, but for many visitors the most interesting aspect of Shaldford is the story of its mysterious restoration.
A fraternity known as 'Ferguson's Gang' formed in the 1920s with the laudable aim of preserving the English countryside. Members were elected by ballot, stayed entirely anonymous and adopted colourful pseudonyms such as 'Sister Agatha' and 'The Bloody Bishop'. The restoration of Shaldford Mill, a favoured location for the group's secret meetings, was one of their primary projects. After fully repairing the structure, Ferguson's Gang donated the mill to the National Trust in 1932.
