In 1794, Britain is at war with France. 74 'Martello' Towers were constructed all along the South Coast to protect against invasion. These were also used in defence against Nazi air attacks during the Second World War.
Today only 25 still stand and many have been restored. The tower at Rye remains derelict but still stands triumphantly overlooking the River Rother.It is Tower 28 of the 74 between Folkestone and Pevensey andwas constructed under the direction of civil (and canal)engineer, Sir John Rennie.
