Hillmorton Paired Locks

An interesting set of three 'paired' narrow locks. Originally there was just a flight of three narrow locks here but, at its peak of operations, the Oxford Canal at this point suffered a water-based version of total melt-down grid-lock. As part of a then modernisation programme to ease congestion, a second set of three narrow locks was built alongside the first.

Today it is an interesting spot with the new craft works built in 2001 on the wharf near the locks now being home to the British Waterways' Waterway Conservation and Regeneration Centre.

Hilmorton is close to Rugby - and also nearby are the charming villages of Ashby St Ledgers and Dunchurch (with Guy Fawkes' House), and Stanford Hall (01788 860250) - a beautiful William & Mary house on the River Avon that also houses a motorcycle museum and tea-rooms.

Between Rugby and Coventry there are also the Norman motte & bailey earthworks of Brinklow Castle at Brinklow (a mile south at Stretton Wharf on the Oxford Canal).
