Selly Oak
A student hub just beyond the leafy enclaves of Edgbaston, Selly Oak gains an additional green corridor (and a scenic cycle path) from the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.
Residents can walk the canal towpath through the red brick campus and catch the train into Birmingham city centre from either Selly Oak station or the University station. In fact, ambitious walkers could probably walk all the way into town, past the Vale, Five Ways and the outskirts of the Botanical Gardens. Cyclists enjoy a pleasant journey along the towpath, but be sure to dismount before you reach the centre.
Dining out in Selly Oak
As befits a student area, Selly Oak has no shortage of pubs, bars, cafes and balti houses. Passing boaters can tie up at convenient visitor moorings and enjoy a traditional pint, a cappuccino and a bowl of pasta at a trendy pavement café – or even a spicy curry in one of Birmingham’s most popular Indian restaurants. Don’t forget to pay a visit to Cadbury World in Bournville, just outside Selly Oak. Chocoholics are guaranteed a mouth-watering day out, and any extra calories can be burned off with a brisk walk back along the Worcester & Birmingham Canal towpath.
