Devizes

The small market town of Devizes stands on the banks of the Kennet & Avon Canal in the ‘gateway to the West Country’, Wiltshire, just a short drive from Bath.

The historic town dates back to the 11th century and is bursting with impressive architecture and Norman churches. At Devizes Wharf, there is a museum which looks at the history of the canal in this area - perfect if you want to get to know more about your town’s past.

The Kennet & Avon Canal runs through the centre of Devizes and no one should take a visit the to the town without having a look at John Rennie’s impressive Caen Hill Flight, a staircase of 16 locks said to be the most striking on any UK waterway. There is a café at the site serving delicious food, made fresh from local products.

On Thursdays, Devizes is filled with people making their way to the weekly market (first held in 1609). Small, specialist shops can also be found hidden away in courtyards and alleyways. Why not wander along the canal before browsing the stalls and exploring the town for bargains and souvenirs?
