The timber-framed Commandery boasts nearly a thousand years of history. Originally built as a monastic hospital by Saint Wulfstan around the year 1085, the Commandery went on to become a family home, a factory, a college and a printers; but perhaps its most famous incarnation was as King Charles II military headquarters during the Civil War. Today, visitors are as charmed by the magnificent Great Hall, the tranquil gardens and the fine period paintings as they are by the illustrious history of this fascinating building.
