People have worshiped in Worcester Cathedral since the far off days of 680 AD, but the impressive building that stands today dates from 1084. The cathedral looms imposingly over the River Seven, backed by the atmospheric ruins of old monastic cloisters and framed by walled gardens.

Visitors who approach through the city should turn a blind eye to the encroaching modern buildings and reserve judgement until they reach the cathedral's interior - when the ancient columns, vaulted roof and air of mystery begin to weave their magic.

Also inside, stained glass windows, medieval carvings and Purbeck marble combine to form a just impression of the cathedral's elegance and historic importance. The shrines of St Wulfstan and St Oswald, and the tomb of Prince Arthur (Henry VII's eldest son) attract much attention, but topping the bill is the elaborately decorated tomb of bad King John who ruled England during the fabled days of Robin Hood.
