Marsden
Marsden village stands at an important trans-Pennine crossing-point, with a historic packhorse bridge, village stocks and impressive church.
The town, which lies close to the canal, is the home of the TV series Where the Heart is and frequently appeared in Last of the Summer Wine.
Marsden Mechanics Institute is an imposing stone building erected in 1861 for the education of working men. It is held to be one of the finest village institutes in the country. The building now houses a library and community hall and is also home to the Mikron Theatre Company who provide original live theatre with a strong musical element. For the past 30 years they have toured the canal system on their narrowboat Tyseley performing in canalside locations.
Pathways and packhorse roads through Marsden
As the Huddersfield Narrow Canal flows through the town, you'll see Close Gate Bridge at Hey Green. This was a pack horse bridge, locally known as Eastergate Bridge and dates from the 17th or 18th century. It stands on the old packhorse road to Rochdale that can be followed out of the valley. It is just one of the historic transport routes that have helped to shape the valley.
Marsden Moor Estate (National Trust) has over 5,000 acres of moorland, criss-crossed by paths, and a programme of events, activities and guided walks runs throughout the year. Once past Standedge Tunnel, you begin the slow descent through the locks down towards Huddersfield.
