While the Huddersfield Narrow Canal bores through the Standedge peak in the canal system's most spectacular tunnel, the countryside above is no less impressive.

The Marsden Moor Estate comprises 5,600 acres of wild moorland - inhabited only by sheep and an astonishing array of birdlife. This includes golden plover, grouse, curlew and twite. You can explore this area by the intricate network of footpaths - including the path along which boat-horses were once led while their captains legged the boats through Standedge Tunnel.

This estate is under the care of the National Trust, which organises a range of guided walks and other events.
