Saint Wilfrid built the original church on this site in AD 672, but this was destroyed and subsequent reconstructions make today's cathedral the fourth church on this site.

Of worthy note is the original 7th Century crypt, the west front from 1220 and the misericords, or choir stalls - beautifully carved and dating back to the late 15th Century.

The church became a cathedral in 1836.

There is also a comprehensive programme of events which take place at the cathedral. Please contact them directly for further information.
