Skipton Castle

Yorkshire

Image for Skipton Castle

One of the best-preserved examples of a Tudor castle anywhere in the UK, Skipton Castle lords it over the town from the top of the High Street much today as it must have done in medieval times.

The castle is today fully-roofed, much as it would have been back then, and you can get a pretty good idea of how life would have been for Skipton's Lord and Lady by visiting the kitchens, banquet hall and gardens. The large watchtower - a key feature of the castle's defences - remains, as does the well-protected inner court and you can see how the original drawbridge and portcullis worked. The castle's hilltop location, originally chosen for its defensive benefits, now means you get great views out over Skipton town and woods from within the grounds. Inside the castle there is a picnic area, gift shop and the Clifford Tearooms. Information on: 01756 792442.

The castle is at the northern end of the short Springs Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Skipton.
