Sheffield

The Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation was key to the metamorphosis of small town Sheffield into Steel City - a thriving industrial power.

Sheffield’s canal scene turns upon Victoria Quays – the terminus of the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation and once a bustling transhipment port with warehouses packed full of grain. Today, the historic warehouses are used for office space and welcoming eateries have appeared in the 19th century railway arches. What this means of course, is that plenty of Sheffield’s residents now have the opportunity to work and dine in close proximity to the canal.

Shop till you drop in Sheffield
Shopaholics will never tire of Meadowhall, the ‘land of shoppertunity’. Most conveniently, Meadowhall is located close by the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation as it flows towards Tinsley. You can even walk there and back, following the canal from Victoria Basin – but most shoppers prefer to relax with a shorter waterside stroll after a hard day’s bargain hunting, then travel back to Sheffield on the tram.

Waterside walks
Another pleasant waterside walk is along the River Don as it makes its way from Sheffield city centre west to Deepcar and east to Attercliffe. Why not dodge the queues on the Parkway and take to the towpaths for a more relaxing journey into town, either by bike or on foot? Residents of the leafy suburbs of Oughtibridge can enjoy riverside strolls through Wharncliffe Woods, or follow the Don’s winding path with a power walk to work past Owlerton and towards the centre.
