Slaithwaite

Slaithwaite is an attractive waterfront village, with the only working guillotine gate on a narrow canal in the country.

You’ll also find magnificent mill buildings, a Georgian church, the former Free School and the 16th century Slaithwaite Hall. Modern facilities include a fine shopping centre, swimming pool and sports centre, and some excellent pubs.

Days out in Slaithwaite
Just past Lock 22E and on the right is the Civic Hall. Next to this is the Colne Valley Trust’s office where you will find more information about local walks and attractions on and around the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. A slightly different place to relax and enjoy some refreshments is the Moonraker Floating Tearoom moored above Dartmouth Lock 23E.

Lowestwood Mill, near Linthwaite, is a listed building that shows different phases of construction over a long period of time. Slightly further along the towpath, you will see the once derelict Titanic Mill across the fields on the left. Titanic Mill was steam powered and built in 1912 (the year the infamous ship was launched) and has been turned into an environment-friendly housing development.
