Named after the canal engineer, by day this is a quiet, family-friendly pub with good views of Gas Street Basin through tall glass windows and from a canalside patio. The decor isn't quite authentic (a wooden barrel roof done up to look like wharves) but the ales are more genuine, including M&B Mild and Timothy Taylor's Landlord on our visit. Then, at night, the musicians move in. There are jazz acts and tribute bands throughout the week.
