Lime Kilns Inn

  • Lime Kilns Inn
  • Leicestershire, LE10 3ED

The 'Lime Kilns' is situated beside the Ashby Canal, where the main A5 Watling Street crosses over on bridge 15. Originally called 'The Plough', it was built prior to the canal, being one of the coaching inns for travellers between London and Holyhead. There were stables on the ground floor and two small bars on the first floor, along with the owners' two private rooms. Upstairs on the second floor there were accommodation rooms for the travellers.

The advent of the canal, and its close proximity to the pub, meant that boatmen plying the canal had somewhere to stable their horses and a warm bar to quench their thirst. Their trade was mainly coal and lime from the Moira and Ashby district coalfields and it is said that the pub name was changed to the present name because of the numerous limekilns found along the canal.

Today the ground floor is a bar, opening out onto the canal side patio and lawns. The first floor is now all part of the trading area, with a traditional décor and friendly atmosphere. No jukebox or blaring mega TV here. The first floor is private accommodation.

There is a ghost at the Lime Kilns, known as Harry, who gets noticed by moving objects around. This includes pouring vodka out of an optic (without a glass) to several people's amazement. According to one lady, Harry is a woman, whose picture is in the pub somewhere.

There are free moorings available for patrons directly onto the lawns, with enough room for four 68ft boats. There are also moorings opposite the pub and through the bridge near to the water point.
