Queen Anne house gracing the peaceful Cathedral Close.

Jane Austen buffs may recognise Mompesson House as the elegant home of Mrs Jennings in the film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. Built in 1701 for Charles Mompesson MP, the house is a classic example of 18th century architecture with a limestone façade and intricate carvings embellishing the exterior.

The interior of the house does not disappoint. Cut-glass chandeliers, Dutch flower paintings and mahogany furniture bestow period style in the Drawing Room, and the grand table is authentically laid with Coalport china in the Dining Room. The Turnbull collection of 18th century drinking glasses shows the development of glassware design throughout the Georgian period. A fine oak staircase sweeps to the upper floors - which boast magnificent plasterwork. Pause on the half gallery to admire the pretty walled garden with its pergola and colourful herbaceous borders.
