Ted Ellis Nature Reserve

  • Wheatfen Broad
  • Norfolk, NR14 7AL

The Ted Ellis Trust has enabled Wheatfen Broad to be designated both a nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It forms over 100 acres of reed beds, tidal channels and carr, with a unique diversity of flora and fauna, four miles of pathways and the small broads of Wheatfen and Deepwaters. The walks also extend into 40 acres of Surlingham Wood.

Guided tours can be arranged through the warden, Mr. David Nobbs. Access for wheelchair users is excellent too.

Ted Ellis was one of Norfolk's best known naturalists and broadcasters. He lived at Wheatfen Broad for 40 years and was active in many organisations for nature conservation. His scientific work includes the discovery of many new British micro-fungi and he was able to explain the inter-dependency of life forms on the Broads and particularly on his beloved Wheatfen Broad.
