Blue Anchor

The Blue Anchor is the demure neighbour of the attention-grabbing Rutland. But once inside, a proud sign announces that this is one of the oldest ale houses in the country (first licensed in 1722) and also that Gustave Holst wrote his Hammersmith Suite here. Frank Sinatra was making his voice heard on our visit, and an extensive wine list suggested that the Blue Anchor has moved beyond its ale house routes. Having undergone an extensive refurbishment in 2008, the cosy furniture and spruced up decor ensure that the Blue Anchor remains a popular venue.
