Whitehouse Nature Reserve
- Whitehouse Nature Reserve
- Powys
An outstanding example of nature creation utilising the original canal now by-passed by the adjacent road diversion. The proximity of the reserve to Welshpool provides an area with an easily accessible educational resource by all sections of the community. Whitehouse Nature Reserve’s proximity to Welshpool and the fact that this reserves can only be accessed by foot make this an attractive nature reserve to provide and improve community facilities and interpretation.
Look down through the clear water of the canal and you will be able to see a wide range of wildlife. There are many species of water plant, with fish swimming between them. Amongst the reeds dragonflies and damselflies can be seen during the summer months.
Already well used by fishermen, the nature reserve is also on the route to one of the most popular circular walks in the area, linking Welshpool town to Belan and Powis Estate and Powis Castle before returning back to Welshpool.
Access for all/towpath condition
Access is via the towpath from either Welshpool or Belan Locks. There is a new, rolled stone surface to the towpath from Severn Road Bridge in the centre of Welshpool through to Belan Locks so all users can access the nature reserve from either location. The reserve itself has a rolled stone path circling the pond and there are benches to rest or picnic.
