The Montgomery Wildlife Trust was formed in 1982 with the aim of promoting wildlife conservation in Montgomeryshire.

The Trust look after many nature reserves in the area, including:

Ty Brith
A small site consisting of 4 unspoilt hay meadows near Four Crosses. How a meadow ought to be; lots of flowers, grasses, insects, butterflies and nesting birds

Llyn Coed Y Dinas
An old gravel pit now transformed into a pond and reed bed on the edge of Welshpool, a short walk from the Whitehouse Nature Reserve on the canal.

Dolydd Hafren
Close to the canal at Berriew, Dolydd Hafren is primarily a bird reserve with a series of ponds and a spectacular meander of the River Severn. High level hides give a view across the site.

Red House
Squeezed in between the canal and the River Severn, Red House is a beautiful piece of wet pasture and woodland. Access it from the towpath between Garthmyl and Abermule.

Llanmerewig Glebe
Another little site, just one field but the location of the rare Autumn Crocus or Meadow Saffron. Close to the canal at Abermule and Aberbechan.

Pwll Penarth
Just beyond the end of the towpath near Newtown. This site used to be settling beds for a sewage farm – now it's a real bird paradise. The lake has been developed to provide shallow margins for dabbling birds and deeper areas for divers. Two hides ensure good views over the lake and the cliffs, where sand martins nest.
