Located in the heart of historic Castlefield is popular bar and restaurant, Dukes 92, named because of its position next to the 92nd and final lock on the Rochdale Canal.
As the bottom lock it should have been No1, but as the story goes the canal was apparently built by a stubborn Yorkshireman who refused to have No1 in Lancashire.
Originally a stable block for horses delivering food off barges, Dukes 92 has been refurbished and extended three times since it opened in 1991. Today, its sophisticated décor mixes modern influences with antiques, carefully retaining some of the site’s original heritage and features. The result is a stylish yet relaxed venue in which to socialise with family by day and party with friends by night.
The restaurant at Dukes 92 serves up high quality and modern pub food daily and the grill menu is particularly popular, serving burgers, steaks and seafood. Perhaps most famous for its fantastic speciality cheese counter, Dukes 92 serve hefty portions of your favourite cheese served with pâté and fresh crusty bread. With over 50 different cheeses from around Europe on offer, Dukes 92 definitely stands out from the crowd when it comes to pub grub.
Dukes 92’s striking location certainly lends itself to your meal, and the canalside terrace is the perfect place for al fresco dining on those balmy summer nights. Surrounding Castlefield is also beautiful and, after massive regeneration in recent years, has managed to transform itself from a derelict industrial area into Britain’s first designated urban heritage park. Although vibrant and busy at night, Dukes 92 is the perfect spot to enjoy wonderful views of the tranquil Rochdale Canal, and maybe watch a passing narrowboat or two enter the lock.
