Bowling Basin

  • Lowlands

This attractive basin is at the western end of the Forth & Clyde Canal, where it meets the River Clyde. The sea lock to the Clyde is big enough to take small sea-going craft, so all manner of boats may be found in the basin. Nearby is the Saltings Nature Reserve.

The idea of a navigational link from the Forth to the Clyde was first proposed in the reign of King Charles II, but was not completed until 1790. The link not only connected the east and west coasts, but with the help of the Union Canal, also linked Glasgow to Edinburgh.
