Fourteen Locks Canal Centre

South west Wales

T: 01633 894802

The Fourteen Locks Canal Centre at Rogerstone, on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, is located at Britain's most remarkable staircase lock system - the Cefn flight or 'Fourteen Locks'- where the canal level was raised 50 metres in just 740 metres. Unlike a standard staircase flight, the locks are all interdependent, and are particularly narrow and deep - all in all an amazing feat of engineering. 13 locks are still derelict, whose restoration remains the long-term focus of the Monmouthshire, Brecon & Abergavenny Canals Trust, whose efforts, together with local council funding, have effected a beautiful restoration to the top lock earlier this year.

The visitor centre at the top lock, has really interesting 'interpretive displays' showing how, in the 19th Century, commodities such as coal and iron were transported from the South Wales valleys to the ports of Newport and Cardiff; plus there's an attractive picnic area and way-marked walks nearby.
