Is Date Flexible?: Essential maintenance to fit new lock gates to Hungerford Marsh Lock 73

Assets affected:

  • lock

Reasons for work:

  • maintenance
UPDATE (01 March 2012): Please note Lock 72 & 74 have also been padlocked to maintain water levels and to safeguard personal safety on the lock stoppage.

UPDATE (17 February 2012): The lock stoppage at Hungerford has been extended to Friday 23rd March.

Full investigation of Hungerford Marsh Lock, including excavation of the downstream cill area, has revealed significant structural defects to the lock approach walls. Essentially, the walls require underpinning as the foundations have been washed away. The engineers are extremely concerned about the long term stability of the structure and must undertake this work immediately, while the lock gates are being replaced.

Clearly this extension will inconvenience some of our users, for which I apologise.

UPDATE (26 January 2012): Due to the condition of the canal below waterline, being far worse than anticipated. The stoppage period has been extended for the additional repairs required. ----------------------------------------------------

UPDATE (06 January 2012): Due to access issues the Hungerford Marsh Lock stoppage will be delayed by one week and is therefore planned to commence on 16 January, subject to current difficulties being resolved.

Note that essential stoppage works at Beech Grove Lock (between Crofton and Froxfield) will commence on the 9 January, as planned.
