Winter Stoppage Programme 2009/2010

Each winter British Waterways undertakes a comprehensive programme of works to improve the network. This year the winter stoppage programme includes work on 31 locks, 21 reservoirs, 20 bridges and 6 aqueducts. £1087k will be spent on rebuilding waterway walls and £808k will go towards river and canal weirs.

We do our best to minimise the impact of all stoppages in the interest of customer service and have tried to keep at least one long distance route open between north and south. Most stoppages are planned to start early Monday mornings and finish late afternoon or early evening on Fridays.

This year winter stoppage details will be maintained exclusively on waterscape.com. Following feedback from boaters, it was decided early in 2009 that the traditional printed leaflet would no longer be produced. This not only saves us money but also reduces the risk of boaters making cruising plans on the basis of out of date information. We recommend that you stay abreast of unavoidable changes to the programme by downloading the latest pdf or spreadsheet before you cruise. You can also subscribe to our stoppage alerts service.

Paper copies

Anyone wanting a paper copy of the winter stoppage programme can still obtain one by contacting BW’s customer service centre on 0845 671 5530 or emailing enquiries.hq@britishwaterways.co.uk who will print the latest information on the day the request is received.

Please note, the British Waterways re-structure will take effect from 2 November 2009. You can find contact details for the local waterway units in the pdf download below.
