Waypoints
1. Bathgate Station to Woodcockdale (9 miles / 14.4km)
From Bathgate Station, make your way into Linlithgow town centre, continue straight on to the bottom of the hill and then turn right into the High Street. After cycling on the towpath for just under 2m miles, you will come to Woodcockdale. It is run by the sea scouts who offer accommodation and, occasionally, boat hire.
2. Woodcockdale to Avonbridge (7 miles / 11.2km)
Cross over Avon Aqueduct. You may want to walk at this point as there are cobbles. The towpath will enter a wood and further on you will pass under a bridge and 20m further, leave the towpath to the right onto a road. Go over the bridge and after 250m, turn left into Muiravonside Country Park. There will be some speed bumps as you enter the park. Cycle straight on to the Visitor Centre. From the Visitor Centre, go past the car park and turn left towards the alternate exit. Continue through the woodland and carefully cross the A801. Take the minor road opposite towards Candie. At the bottom of the hill, turn right and then left after about 300m. There will be a steep descent with sharp bends into the valley of the River Avon. After two old railway bridges, the road will turn right. The route follows the valley for about 1.5 miles with a stream on your left and cottages on both sides. Turn left on the B8028 and cycle through Avonbridge.
3. Avonbridge to Bathgate Station (12 miles / 19.2km)
After the station, the path will turn to a rough farm track. When you come to a fork, keep left following the old railway track bed. The tarmac path will end at Whiteside. Turn right into the residential road and then left. When the path forks, bear left and then right before the exit barrier. The path exits to the pavement and you need to continue past the roundabout and then carefully join the road. Turn right into the Retail Park car park to come to Bathgate Station.
