The Lancaster Canal, for the most part, does not allow cycling along the towpath. However there are three accessible lengths which have been designated as safe for use by bicycles, the longest being approximately 3 miles long - a good distance especially for families with children and elderly people.

Here are the three sections accessible to cyclists.

Preston: Ashton Basin to Bridge 17 at Cottam Hall (1.9 miles)
You can join the path at Ashton Basin Terminus, Tulketh Brow or the access ramp in Haslam Park.

Lancaster: Bridge 95 at Haverbreaks to Bridge 110 at Beaumont Turnpike (3 miles)
Join the path from Haverbreaks Bridge right through the city centre.

Carnforth: Canal Basin to Bridge 129 at Hodgeson's (0.6 miles)
From Nu-Way Acorn Marina, A6 go north to Hodgson's Bridge avoiding the town centre.

Getting there

Parking: There are plenty of parking places along the way and in Preston and Lancaster city centres.

Public transport: Public transport links are good.
