Waypoints
1. Exmouth Station to Phear Park
The station is a handy place to start your ride. Start off cycling northwards along Marine Way until you reach the football ground. Here, cross Marine Way and take the right hand turn into Lyndhurst Road, which you follow to the end. Turn right into Withycombe Road and at the junction of Park Lane, cross into Phear Park.
2. Phear Park to Budleigh Salterton
This is a pleasant stretch which heads towards the top right hand corner of the park. Unfortunately you will need to dismount and walk your bike the last 50 metres to the cycle way. Once there, however, you can relax on the largely traffic-free, sign-posted path which leads you out of Exmouth and into Devon’s splendid countryside. Using a former railway line as a cycle lane has one great benefit, it is largely flat. Take the opportunity to enjoy the views without worrying about the hills. Eventually you will emerge from the railway path and turn right into Bear Lane.
3. To see the sea
When you reach the end of Bear Lane, cross the busy B3178 and turn right into Bedlands Lane. Then take the right and first left in Moor Lane, followed by the third left into the High Street. Watch out for traffic here. The High Street merges into Fore Street, which will take you to the sea front. And relax!
4. Exmouth Esplanade
To return to Exmouth via a different route, retrace your steps along the railway path until you pass under the 2nd railway bridge and see signs to Castle Lane. This is a minor road which will take you all the way to Littleham. When you reach the main junction, turn left and then take the next right into Maer Lane. This quieter road leads down to the Exmouth seafront. Turn right along the esplanade to make the most of 2-miles of sandy beach.
5. Back to Exmouth Station
Head westwards for Exmouth docks. Follow the docks round on the seaward side and turn into Shelley Road. Fork left at the junction, crossing the car park and heading into the recreation ground. A cul-de-sac road will take you back to Exmouth Station.
