Laggan Wolftrax
Route facts
Waterways:
Caledonian Canal »
Difficulty: Moderate
Circular route from: BasecampMTB Strathmashie Forest
Opened in 2005, Laggan Wolftrax is an exciting, purpose-built, single-track mountain bike centre with nearly 35km of track for all-year-round use. Guaranteed to leave you panting for more!
Drink in the stunning views of Loch Laggan, the hill fort at Dun da Lamh, and the natural beauty of Strathmashie – which you will see from whichever route you ride – and you’re guaranteed to understand why Laggan Wolftrax is something special. Dare to try the purpose-built, testing singletrack, and the unique experience is complete!
The Trails
There are four different trails for you to try:
Wolftrax Green Route (Green - Easy)
This easy-graded low level route links with some Sustrans-funded trails to give a circular route between the Laggan Wolftrax hub and the community-owned Gorstean car park.
The trail is more than just a forest road and has been built with the very young and the more inexperienced in mind. It winds through tall pine trees and introduces some typical mountain biking single-track and trail features, so it's ideal for those trying mountain biking for the first time.
Don't let the grade put you off it if you consider yourself to be a decent rider already, as many experienced cyclists find the 4.8km round trip an excellent muscle warmer.
Wolftrax Bike Park (Blue - Moderate)
This is what you could call a three-dimensional single-track. The trail is a wide, sealed-surface single-track with big berms, tabletops and gap jumps. It’s a lot of fun whatever your skill level, twisting and turning through open ground and pine forest. Kick off the berms and you’ll be thrown into double jumps, table tops, gravity drops and much, much more!
The 3.6km length includes the gentle forest road climb, but take advantage of the shuttle service – enjoying the spectacular local views in comfort – and you’ll have loads more ‘air time’ on the trail itself. See if you can beat the shuttle bus back down to the café!
Not recommended for very young children.
Wolftrax Red Route (Red - Difficult)
The red route is a fantastic 15km experience in two sections. For the inexperienced it is technical and challenging; for the experienced it strikes a good balance between being rideable and interesting.
Look out for Air’s Rock, a challenging slab feature, and the built-rock causeways such as the Rib Rattler, as well as plenty of natural rock features such as the Bhadain Boulder Field. Finish with The Wolf Run; 300m of timber boardwalk which brings you back to the Bike Park.
Wolftrax Black Route (Black - Severe)
Aimed at the expert riders, the black route is a demanding, technical trail. Tight and testing, it has a multitude of rock features, sizeable drop-offs, stone staircases, boulder fields and rock slabs – and there aren’t any chicken runs for the faint of heart.
For the expert, the 7.8km black route has some serious drop-offs such as 2-Ton Drop, boulder fields such as Stilletto Staircase, and the fearsome Devil’s Chessboard - a 40 metre rock slab staircase with 24 different levels, a real test of skill and endurance.
Helmet, gloves, elbow and knee protection recommended.
