The Marriots Way
Route facts
Waterways:
River Wensum »
Difficulty: Moderate
Starts at: Norwich railway station
Ends at: Reepham
The Marriot’s Way forms part of National Cycle Route 1, along the trackbed of a decommissioned railway line. It is named after William Marriot, who was the chief engineer and manager of the Midland & Great Northern Railway for 41 years.
The route follows level and well surfaced railway path for as far as Whitwell, and there are some on-road sections through Norwich.
Waypoints
Turn left out of the station and follow the River Wensum through the city centre, past housing, a cinema, shops and bars. Turn right at the first bridge you come to and then cross the river at the Novisad Friendship Bridge. At the end of the bridge turn right again, where you will join up with National Cycle Route 1, and follow it north up King Street. Route 1 continues through the city centre, and after crossing a ring road, joins up with the Marriots Way.

Once you have reached Whitwell you can continue east along Route 1, towards Fakenham, although this pretty village makes a nice detour. Stop off at a nearby pub or cafe for a well deserved break, or take in some historical sites with a visit to St. Michaels church. More experienced cyclists can complete the Marriots Way by heading through Reepham towards Aylesham.

After Whitwell the route becomes more uneven and less well surfaced, so it is best to attempt this in dry conditions. If you happen to be passing through Reepham on a Wednesday, be sure to stop off at the market, which has been running on and off since the 13th century.
When you reach Aylesham the Bure Valley Railway Walk, where cycling is also permitted, will continue alongside you to Wroxham. Due to the narrow path it is best to exercise caution here. Once you get to Wroxham there is a mainline rail service that will take you back to Norwich.
