This is a great cycle route past the beautiful Loweswater Lake and into the fells with on/off road options. If you would like to extend the walk, park at Whinlatter Visitor Centre and cycling down to the start at Lorton. This does, however, include a long climb back to 318m.
Waypoints
1. Lorton to Loweswater
The route begins at the Post Office in Lorton and from there you need to head for High Mill and on to Low Swinside. The first section of the bridleway starts here taking you right and back to the road. To avoid this, cycle 1/2 mile past Lorton Park on your right and the school on your left and take the next left. Both routes join at Hopebeck. After 1/2 mile, the road forks - bear right for on-road and left for off-road. For on-road, when you meet the B5289, turn left and bear right at the next fork for Loweswater. There is a good stop at Kirkstile Inn. For off-road, after 200 yards, join the bridleway through High and Low Hollins and down to the road. At the B5289, turn left for 1 mile past the woodland on your right and along the stream on your left until they both draw away. Pick up the bridleway on your right to Scalehill and Bridge, turn left when you meet the road and climb to the village.
2. Loweswater to Mosser Mains
There is now a choice of on or off road round the lake. On-road is straight forward - go back to the road and cycle down to the lake. When the road comes close to the lake, look out for a road to your right, leading away gradually and upwards to High Mosser, with Mosser Fell on you right. For the off-road option, once back up on the road, turn left and after 300 yards, turn left again to Maggie's Bridge, forking right just after the car park. You will follow the path, keeping right all around the lake until you meet the road. Turn right, with the Grange Hotel on your left, cycle down to just beyond the telephone box, and turn left onto bridleway. This becomes road after 1/2 mile and leads you to High Mosser with Mosser Fell to your right. Your next village is Mosser Mains.
3. Mosser Mains to Cringley Hill
You go down and through the village, turning right at the staggered junction to Catgill Bridge and Cringley Hill, climbing slowly over the top and down to Low Lorton. Cross the River Cocker at the mill and go straight over the main road and again at the next crossroad, bringing you back to the Post Office.
