When 'Sustrans', the charity helping build the National Cycle Network, designed and built the C2C (Coast to Coast) cylceway, besides The Old Coach Road - the tough option - they mapped two other gentle routes out of Keswick, heading towards Penrith. This route uses both of them, one to take us out and the other as the return.

Getting there

Parking: Parking is available in Keswick.

Waypoints

1. Keswick to Mungrisdale

A5091 and left again at the A66, joining the C2C cycle track on the opposite side for a little under a mile. Take great care crossing this major road. Turn right towards Mungrisdale, a pretty village with excellent pub if you are ready for a break and refreshments. The church here, St Kentigern's is worth a visit, having an unusual three decker pulpit. The present church was built in 1756 although a church had existed here since AD552. You can cross the River Gklenderamackin by a footbridge just below the Inn or turn left at the junction shortly after you see The Mill Inn on your left.

2. Mungrisdale to Keswick

Staying on the Inn side of the river, continue along this lane which will take you along the edge of Southern Fell on a gated path with Blencathra (or Salleback) to your right. After two miles, you will re-join the cycleway at Scales. Follow this path down the hill and off to the right, back through the wood and down through Threlkeld to the A66, the point where you first crossed. This time, stay with the Coast to Coast path which takes you down onto the old railway track by the River Greta. This is a lovely ride but there are several gates and some steep steps to climb to bring you up to the level of the A66 viaduct before the track descends into Keswick and back to the start.
