The Celtic Trail
Route facts
Waterways:
River Wye »
Distance: 127.38 miles / 205 km
Duration: 5-7 days
Difficulty: Energetic
Starts at: Chepstow Castle
Ends at: Carmarthen
Some of the most diverse scenery in Wales can be enjoyed on the Celtic Trail, from mountains and historic monuments to idyllic valleys and lush greenery.
The route begins at Chepstow Castle, by the eastern 'Gateway to Wales' and traverses the breadth of the country through Swansea to Carmarthen. Eventually it is hoped that the trail will extend all the way to Fishguard and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
The Celtic Trail offers a relatively traffic-free route through Wales, although sunny weekends can bring a plethora of tourist vehicles to the quietest of country lanes. The green valleys, canal towpaths, forest tracks and mountain paths can generally be explored in peace and at your leisure. Some cyclists leave the trail for several days to discover the hidden gems of Welsh countryside that glint tantalisingly around nearly every corner - and why not.
Experienced cyclists may wish to take advantage of several alternatives to the low-level basic route which are sign-posed at frequent intervals along the trail. These higher-level options will increase the difficulty rating as well as the total mileage covered.
