1. Start

Start point, cycling route: Trans-Pennine Trail 1 - Southport to Widnes

2. Southport to Woodvale (5 miles / 8km)

The route begins at Southport, near Southport Zoo. There is a train station pubs, shops, cafes, places to stay, a post office, toilets and a telephone nearby as well. You will be cycling on the National Cycle Route, along Sefton Coastal Path by the Irish Sea. After passing Ainsdale, where there is a train station, pubs, shops, cafes and a post office, you will arrive in Woodvale.

3. Woodvale to Green Lane (6 1/4 miles / 10km)

The first part of this section is to go over the A565 which is considered to be a dangerous part of the route, so you may need to be careful. After cycling along the Chesire Lines Path and Chesire Lines Brook, you will cross over the B5195. After passing over Cabin Lane and past Upper Gore Farm, you will arrive at Green Lane. There is not a great deal in the immediate area, apart from a pub a short cycle ride past Upper Gore Farm.

4. Green Lane to Aintree (3 1/4 miles / 5.2km)

Setting off from Green Lane, you will be cycling along the National Cycle Network and over Sefton Lane and further on, over Northern Perimeter Road. After cycling along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, you will arrive in Aintree, where there is a train station, pubs, shops, cafes, a post office, toilets and somewhere to stay.

5. Aintree to Childwall (7 3/4 miles / 12.4km)

At the start of this section, you need to go over a bridge and it is advised that you use 'Wally Steps' and the wheelign ramp to access it. This section will take you down Ormskirk Road and past Aintree train station and Race Course. Crossing over the A59 is considered a danger point of the route so you may need to be carfeul. Passing Orrell Park and Rice lane, you will continue along the National Cycle Network. Cross over the A580 and after you have passed by Broad Green train station, you will only have a short distance to ride before arriving in Childwall. There is a train station in Childwall, parking , toilets, a telephone and the National Wildflower Centre.

6. Childwall to Hale (7 miles / 11.2km)

After setting off from Childwall, you will cycle along the Liverpool Loop Line and continue along the National Cycle Network. You will pass by Gateacre and Woolton, where there are shops, pubs, cafes and a post office. You will then pass Halewood Country Park and Visitor Centre. When you come to the A561, cyclists are able to use the underpass, and you will then cycle down Alderfield Drive and past Brook Farm and you will be in Hale. There are a few amenities in Hale, including shops, pubs, a post office, telephones and somewhere to stay.

7. Hale to Widnes (3.5 miles / 5.6km)

After setting off along the High Street and then Town Lane, you will again meet the National Cycle Network after Halegate Road and will be cycling alonf the River Mersey. You will pass a car park, toilets and picnic facilities. After the chemical factory, you will need to cross over Ditton Marsh, where cyclists are asked to dismount when going over the bridge. Cycle along Desoto Road and Vickers Road, pass the Catalyst Museum and you will arrive in Widnes. There are many facilities in Widnes, including pubs, shops, cafes, tourist information, places to stay, toilets, telephones, a post office and parking facilities.
