This is a very scenic route through some picturesque lancashire villages and towns. There are plenty of places to stop off for refershments along the way so you can take you time and relax in the peaceful surroundings. You will need to display a British Waterways cycle permit which you can download from the main cycle page.
The route takes you along the towpath of part of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. You will need to dismount from your bike when you are approaching stone arch bridges.

2. Wigan Pier to Kirkless Hall (2 miles / 3.2km)
This cycle route begins at Wigan Pier, used in the George Orwell book, 'The Way to Wigan Pier' and only a short ride away from Wigan town centre. Cycle along the the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, towards Ince-in-Makerfield. You will pass the Wigan 23 Locks on your way to Kirkless Hall, which exactly 2 miles / 3.2km from Wigan Pier.

3. Kirkless Hall to Haigh Hall (1.5 miles / 2.4km)
After stopping for some refreshments at Kirkless Hall, you will be ready for the next leg of your journey to Haigh Hall. As you set off along the towpath once again, there will be another couple of pubs on your left. The canal will turn left as it leads you through New Springs, Wigan, past Shedfield Bridge and through the wonderful setting of Haigh Hall Country Park.

4. Haigh Hall to Red House Bridge (3.5 miles / 5.6km)
From Haigh Hall, you will once again continue along the towpath. After about 1 1/2 miles / 2.4km, you will Red Rock public house, near Standish, the ideal place to stop for a wonderful Sunday lunch. After a well earned break, cotinue along the towpath towards Adlington and you will come to Red House Bridge. There are a number of pubs at this point for you to use if you skipped lunch at Red Rock.
