Fine dining
Something to celebrate?
Gourmands and romantics can enjoy an intimate diner a deux or a memorable night out with friends in one of our elegant waterside restaurants.
To dine in style in Brum, we recommend:
Bar Epernay
Address: 171 Wharfside Street
B1 1RL
T: 0121 632 1430
The most memorable thing about Bar Epernay has to be the baby grand piano in the corner, playing modern and classical tunes throughout lunchtimes and evenings. Luxurious surroundings create a distinctly exclusive atmosphere and if you've just trooped in after a hard morning's shopping, you may wonder if you're under-dressed! As the name would suggest, Bar Epernay offers a full range of champagnes, making it well worth a visit on that special night out.
Blue Mango
Address: Regency Wharf
B1 2DS
T: 0121 633 4422
Definitely a touch more upmarket than the typical Balti house. This Indian 'brasserie and bar', all metal and glass, is tucked away off Broad Street on the upmarket Regency Wharf development. The emphasis is on traditional fare prepared carefully, with a particularly wide range of vegetarian fare. Given the prestige location, Blue Mango's prices are surprisingly keen at £7-£8 for a main course.
Fino Cafe Bar
Address: 120-122 Wharfside Street
B1 1RQ
T: 0121 632 1232
Run by Michelin starred chef Patrick McDonald, Fino's continental menu and extensive range of wines show why it was voted 'Top Ten New Restaurant 2002' by The Observer. Airy and modern, it's an ideal waterside venue for a thrilling night out, with typical fare including king prawns with chilli and flat pasta ribbons.
Red Peppers Restaurant & Bar
Address: 117 Wharfside Street
B1 1RF
T: 0121 6434202
A lively and vibrant restaurant in the Mailbox, Red Peppers' interior matches its name and you are greeted with a modern and inviting decor. The place is described as a 'bar and restaurant', although it's more likely that you would go to try the Mediterranean food than just sit and sample the cocktails, beers and wines. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
Restaurant Bar-a-Jee
Address: 265 Broad Street
B1 2DS
T: 0121 643 6700
This top-floor restaurant on Broad Street Tunnel may look unprepossessing from street level, but scores highly with Indian food aficionados. Sister establishment to the well-known Rajnagar in Olton, its menu combines traditional fare with more inventive fish and seafood specialities, such as monkfish machari. And we'll award it an extra canal point for the punning sign which makes it look like 'Restaurant Barjee'.
Santa Fe
Address: 178-180 Wharfside Street
B1 1RQ
T: 0121 632 1250
A change from the continental and Mediterranean cuisine which seems to dominate the Mailbox, Santa Fe is a delight in New Mexican dining. A tempting menu, a large list of South American wines and an array of beers and spirits greet visitors to the stylish restaurant. The laid-back atmosphere and relaxing background music create an easy-going environment to enjoy an evening out with friends.

Zinc (Birmingham)
Address: Regency Wharf
B1 2DS
T: 0121 200 0620
Aka Conran the Bar, Birmingham. The Birmingham outpost of Terence Conran's metropolitan chain is quite the classiest bar on Broad Street: waitress service, leather settees, and a Modern European menu specialising in crustacea (seafood to you and me). And though its minimalist look is right out of a 21st century design manual, it makes the best of its canalside location, with an open-air terrace and glass-walled dining room overlooking Gas Street Basin. None too cheap, though there's an affordable set menu at lunchtimes.
