Camden

New York has Greenwich Village, London has Camden Town, the bohemian place to see and be seen.

Nearest tube: Camden Town

There are pubs a plenty by the popular lock - but beware the 100,000 bargain hunters who descend on the colourful market every Saturday.

Caffe Crema

Address: 75 West Yard, Camden Lock Place
NW1 8AF
T: 020 7284 1890

An oasis in the swirling chaos of Camden Market, Caffe Crema overlooks Hampstead Road Lock and the criss-crossing canal bridges. Recharge your batteries and rest your elbows here before plunging back into the melee of the market.

Camden Lock Market

Address: Camden Town
NW1 8AF

On one side of the road is the well-known Camden Market: on the other, the slightly grubbier Camden Canal Market. Both are crammed with food stalls - baguettes, baked potatoes, curry, noodles and so on. You wouldn't go here for the fine dining experience, but, well, sometimes you just need a kebab.

Feng Shang

Address: Cumberland Basin, Prince Albert Road
NW1 7SS
T: 020 7485 8137

info@fengshang.co.uk

Good value floating Chinese restaurant, moored at Cumberland Basin on the edge of Regent's Park - an abbreviated stub of the Regent's Canal which once led towards Euston. As well as the staple dishes you'd expect, there's shark's fin soup and stir-fried frog's legs. And who could resist 'Braised Prawns with Appetising Sauce'?

Jongleurs and Canalside Bar (Camden)

Address: 11 East Yard, Camden Lock
NW1 8AB
T: 0870 787 0707

Camden branch of the famous comedy club in a prime canalside location by Camden Market. There's a Market Bar with live DJs, a Terrace Bar for summer evenings, and an indoor Canalside Bar with views over the lock. Formerly known as Dingwalls, the venue still maintains a live music presence. Pretty much everything except the quiet life - but let's face it, you don't come to Camden for solitude and inner contemplation.

Lloyds No. 1 (Camden)

Address: The Ice Wharf, Suffolk Wharf
NW1 7BY

Lloyds Bars are essentially Wetherspoon's with music, which in Camden includes Wednesday evening jazz and Friday funk. This massive establishment opposite Camden Market packs them in at nights, but arrive earlier and you'll be more likely to enjoy a £5 steak & chips deal without having to fight your way through the crowds.

My Fair Lady

Address: 250 Camden High Street
NW1 8QS
T: 020 7485 4433

Restaurant boat that, unusually for the Regent's Canal, is open to individual diners rather than exclusively for private hire. Sailings take up to three hours for Sunday lunch or evening meals, during which a well-prepared three-course meal is served. The route takes you past London Zoo and Regent's Park to Little Venice - the most picturesque stretch of London's canals.

Starbucks Coffee Co. (Camden)

Address: Camden High Street
NW1 7BX
T: 020 7485 1986

Coffee bar enjoying a stunning position in the whitewashed Camden lock cottage. The best seats are on the terrace, overlooking Hampstead Road Lock and Camden Market.

Walkers Quay Waterside Restaurant

Address: 250 Camden High Street
NW1 8QS
T: 020 7485 6210

Modern European food in the heart of Camden, right by the MTV studios for those who fancy a bit of star-spotting. Open all day, the Waterside is a rare touch of class in Camden.
