This route is excellent for viewing sections of Roman history in the form of the Wall and Rough Castle, as well as some examples of canal architecture.
Starting at Rough Castle, the best preserved fort along the Wall, take the footpath initially alongside the Wall for 1.75 miles passing traces of the old swing bridge that used to be at Bonnybridge.
Continue until you meet the canal. Cross over the canal and walk down the towpath on the northern side of the canal. On the other side about half a mile down, you will see more traces of the Wall and the line of the military road which ran 40m south of the rampart.
Following on from here you will reach a pub, formerly the lock-keeper's house and stable building. Pass by the lock gates here and continue on to Hagg and the end of your journey. You can still see the original swing bridge at Castlecary across the way.
