Bradford-on-Avon Discovery Trail

This trail is one of several along the Kennet & Avon Canal, a National Waterway Walk. It follows public rights of way and is marked along the way with the symbol above.

The Bradford-on-Avon Discovery Trail is a historic, scenic and picturesque way to spend a couple of hours. You will pass some delightful mills, terraces and churches. You may even decide to break off from the trail and explore the town and the local rural footpaths.

Parking: There is parking all along the route.

 

Waypoints

1. Railway Station to the Wesleyan Chapel

From Bradford-on-Avon railway station head towards the historic Wesleyan Chapel.

2. Wesleyan Chapel to Middle Bank

Walk back down Coppice Hill and when you get to the bottom, turn right along Shambles. The Shambles is an original market place. A 15th Century archway remains from an earlier building period and facades of a pair of timber framed buildings of about 1600. Turn right along Market Street, where you will pass a grilled arch which covers a part of the town's ancient water supply. At the end of Market Street, turn left down Newtown. You will pass Priory Barn on your left, a late 15th Century building which once belonged to the Manors of Bradford. Take the first right and pass the Zion Baptist Church on your left. It was built as a Presbyterian Chapel around 1689 not long after the Act of Toleration. After the church, turn left again. You will pass some glorious terrace houses of various styles and sizes dating from the late17th Century. It descends via stone steps that lead into another terrace known as Middle Bank.
