Llangollen Canal »
Shropshire Union Canal »
Distance: 5.59 miles / 9 km
Duration: Two/three hours
Difficulty: Easy
Circular route from: Nantwich Basin
Rolling Cheshire farmland and lots of boating activity in a very rural setting, with the entertaining chaos of Hurleston Junction en route.
Leave the basin area heading north away from Nantwich and all the activity of the basin and moorings beyond. Follow the Shropshire Union canal for two miles until you reach Hurleston Junction.Immediately before the junction, cross the canal on the accommodation bridge and start up the flight, with the reservoir to your right. You are now walking the Llangollen Canal. If you are in need of sustenance this can be found in Burland by Bridge 6.After Swanley No 2 Lock, leave the canal at Bridge 8, and turn left down Swanley Lane. Straight ahead at the diagonal cross roads and turn right at the T-junction onto Monks Lane. This will take you past the lovely 12th-century church at Acton and to the main road. Cross over and turn left, then right down Wilbraham Road.In the bottom left hand corner is a footpath that leads down to the canal across a field. Cross the bridge over the canal, turn right and walk the last half mile back to the basin along the route you started on.
